A Community Canvas: Atlantic Lottery reveals mural by local artist on head office building

As a publicly owned and purpose-driven organization, Atlantic Lottery is committed to Atlantic Canadians and their communities. In an effort to share the organization’s pride and love of this place to be enjoyed by everyone, Atlantic Lottery decided to turn its head office into a work of art dedicated to Atlantic Canada.

Earlier this year, the company invited Atlantic Canada based artists to submit an eye-catching design for the Community Canvas initiative that captures what they love most about this region. Interested artists were asked to submit a design concept and a brief statement about their piece. A completed work or finished product was not required with a submission.

40 submissions from artists across the region were received and evaluated by an internal panel. Criteria included connection to the contest theme, quality of work and alignment with Atlantic Lottery’s values. Atlantic Lottery is dedicated to fostering an inclusive environment that reflects the diversity of our communities in which we live and serve. Applicants were encouraged to consider and emphasize diversity, equity and inclusion in their designs.

The final, chosen concept was designed by Molly Margaret, an illustrator and muralist from St. John’s, Newfoundland, currently living in Halifax.

She describes her work as being largely inspired by plants and nature, East Coast imagery and culture, as well as architecture and people wearing tiny boots. Margaret uses bold and vibrant colours to create joyous, inclusive, whimsical work for everyone to enjoy. Margaret has worked with clients across the East Coast, including the Bank of Montreal St. John’s, Halifax Marriott Hotel, The Globe and Mail, The St. John’s International Airport, CBC, Target Marketing, the City of St. John’s, and many other local small businesses.

The final, chosen concept has been installed on Atlantic Lottery’s head office at 922 Main Street in downtown Moncton, wrapping the building for the next year.
