Shining light on gambling odds at Sommo Festival 2024
At Atlantic Lottery, we care about educating our players to ensure everyone has the tools they need to keep their play for fun and entertainment. Since festivals and events are all about fun and entertainment, we took our PlayWise Coin Flip game to Sommo Festival this summer to shine some light on gambling odds and myths.
Atlantic Lottery proudly supports over 100 festivals and events each year. In 2024, one of these events was Sommo Festival – a food and music festival in Cavendish, P.E.I. that drew 35,000 attendees.
Festival attendees were invited to play the PlayWise Coin Flip game – but first, they placed a bet on whether they would flip heads or tails. If they were correct about their first bet, they got a chance to bet and flip again. If they were correct twice in a row, they won the game, and they received a green reuseable LED bracelet. However, no one walked away empty handed. If a participant was incorrect in either of their bets, they received a purple version of the reusable LED bracelet.
To ensure rich and insightful conversations with Atlantic Canadians, Atlantic Lottery PlayWise Ambassadors facilitated the game. These ambassadors are trained with the tips and tools to help players make informed decisions about their play.
To make things interesting, each participant was shown the results of the two flips prior to theirs. Many participants considered the results before they wagered. Thanks to this game, we had many authentic conversations with the festival goers about these gambling myths:
- Prior coin flips have no influence on the result of the next flip
- The odds of winning are random
- Gambling should be for fun and entertainment – not a way to make money
Once the sun went down, the distribution of green bracelets for game winners and purple bracelets for non-winners left the crowd with a strong visual impression of the odds when gambling. As you might expect, there were a lot more people partying in purple for their incorrect bets than glowing green for their correct bets. In fact, there was approximately one green bracelet for every four purple bracelets in the crowd.
It was a spectacular sight to see the crowd in a sea of colour to demonstrate gambling odds. The bracelets even generated positive comments from festival performers while they were on stage.
Friday night’s headliner, Grammy-nominated Noah Kahan, remarked at how much he liked the bracelets during his performance, and lead singer of Juno Award-winning The Beaches, Jordan Miller, said they were mesmerizing from the stage on Saturday night.
Clearly, we got the message across! See for yourself:
