Nova Scotians took home not one, but two Set for Life top prizes this March.

The big winners were Cynthia and Stephen Duggan of Waverly, as well as Constantina Kouyas of Stellarton.

Atlantic Lottery’s Set for Life is a $4 Scratch’N Win ticket that offers two options for the top prize. Winners can choose to receive $1,000 a week for 25 years, or a lump sum payment of $675,000. Kouyas and the Duggans will both receive the lump sum payment.

For the Duggans, their top-prize lottery win means more financial freedom.

“We’re used to living on a fairly tight budget, so we’re not used to the idea of having a lot of money yet,” Cynthia said. “We’ve been trying to think about what we would want to do with it.”

Cynthia wasn’t sure if she should even believe Stephen when he told her they had won.

“I thought maybe he was joking because we talked and made jokes about what we might do if we ever won on a lottery ticket, but really thought we’d never win,” Cynthia said. “We just dreamed, that’s what we did.”

The Duggans plan to use their prize money to pay off bills, purchase a new car and complete a number of home renovations, including installing a new metal roof.

Nova Scotia’s other big winner, Kouyas, is a regular Scratch’N Win player, but often purchases just one game at a time, which almost resulted in a very different outcome.

On a recent shopping trip, Kouyas asked the clerk for a Crossword ticket, but her daughter convinced her to get a Set for Life ticket instead, so it would be easier for her to scratch. She agreed, and that decision led to her top-prize win.

Kouyas plans to use her winnings to travel. She has no specific destination in mind but is eager to visit many different places at her leisure.

Kouyas purchased her winning Set for Life ticket at Lawtons in New Glasgow, N.S., while Stephen purchased the Duggans’ winning ticket at the Waverly Road Circle K in Dartmouth, N.S. Both retailers will receive a one per cent seller’s prize.
